The Hospice is located on the site of the University Hospital Aintree and serves the communities of North Merseyside (a population of 1/3 of a million) which includes significant areas of high social deprivation.
The Trust is managed by a Board of voluntary Trustees supported by an operational Management Team.
The Trust obtains its income from the NHS and charitable sources including: donations, fundraising events, legacies, grants etc. Approximately 45% of the running costs of the Hospice are met from charitable sources and from these funds, Woodlands spends (excluding management and fundraising costs) approximately £486,000 a year providing:
- Specialist Day Therapy
- Out-Patients
- Community out-reach
- Education & teaching in Palliative Care
To deliver the services the Trust employs Medical and other clinically qualified personnel including Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists. There are also other appropriately qualified or experienced staff engaged in complementary therapies, management, fundraising, counselling, bereavement support etc. In addition the Hospice is supported by over 100 volunteers.
Whilst delivering high quality services to patients and their families (evidenced by the results of satisfaction studies) the Trustees have always had the ambition to provide a more comprehensive Specialist Palliative Care Service and to succeed in this the Trust plans to develop an inpatient unit of 15 beds for which just over £2¼ million is required and approximately £1½ million p.a. required to run it. Once completed the unit which will take 12 to 14 months to build will replace the Palliative Care beds in Aintree Hospital.
