Carers Support Group
In its Philosophy of Care, Woodlands Hospice acknowledges that the diagnosis of a life-threatening illness affects not only that person but also their family, friends and those close to them
Woodlands Hospice aims to support not only the person diagnosed with the disease but also those around them, family members, friends and significant others.
Individual support is available anytime, face to face at the Hospice or by telephone. Your Key Worker, or any other member of the clinical team, is available to offer a confidential listening ear, giving you time to talk about what is happening, what is worrying you and how to get more information or advice.
The Carers Support Group is an extension of this one-one support and offers a weekly meeting for all carers (whether they be family members, friends or significant others) at the Hospice.
The group is very informal and welcoming and when a person is referred to the Hospice, their carers are automatically invited along to the group.
The group offers practical and emotional support, information and advice and an opportunity to talk to others who may be experiencing similar issues, frustrations and concerns. It provides a valuable space in the week when your needs as a carer can be expressed and for you to realise that you are not alone.
An important part of the advice given is about caring for yourself in order to be able to care for the person who is unwell. In particular, looking at how stress affects us, what we can do to combat it, the importance of having time for yourself and asking for help when it’s needed.
Talks on various topics are arranged which may include advice on diet, medication, support services available, looking after yourself.
Complementary Therapies are offered to all carers who attend the group and are arranged on an appointment basis from our Therapy Outreach team.
The Carers Support Group is held every Wednesday afternoon at the Hospice from 1.30-3pm. For further information, please ask your Key Worker, or telephone the Clinical Team on 0151 529 2299
