Pat meets Dirk Kuyt at Woodlands Hospice
Through Peter's attendance at the Day Hospice, Pat became aware that Woodlands was striving to make a long-awaited dream become reality by building an inpatient unit adjacent to the day hospice. Although her husband would not benefit from the new unit, she decided to raise to fund the Chapel in memory of Peter and her whole focus since this time has been to raise money for the Hospice.
She was disappointed when due to a bad break in her foot requireing major surgery, she was not able to get out and about in the local community to fundraise for a period of time. Not wishing to miss an opportunity, Pat set up a table sale from her hospital bed and also travelled across to the Hospice from the Hospital in a wheelchair to sell items at the Hospice Christmas Fayre to raise money towards her target.
Pat's efforts have been tireless and at times thankless. Pat has collected money in local pubs at almost every Liverpool FC and Everton FC home game in the past few years. Pat now has 'regular' pubs where she collects week in, week out. These pubs have been extremely generous in what they have allowed Pat to do and in the way they have treated her and now welcome her.
On June 6th 2009, the Woodlands Hospice inpatient unit finally opened its doors. Since then, over 90 patients and their families have already benefitted from the new facilities.
The landlords and managers of Pat's pubs and the football fans frequenting them are owed an enormous debt of gratitude from the staff and patients of Woodlands Hospice. As for Pat, she keeps on going. She has now set herself a target of £100,000. Once she has achieved that, Pat tells us she is going to take a well-earned rest. Thank you Pat for everything you have done and continue to do in Peter's memory. You are a true hero of the local community and we truely thank you!
