Carer Support

According to Carers UK there are over six million carers in the UK and the contribution they make to society is well documented.

Caring is a tough role though and it is widely known that many carers do not get the help and advice they need to enable them to care for their partner, family member or friend. This can leave carers feeling isolated and unsupported.

Here at Woodlands our aim is always to offer holistic support to every patient, along with their family and carers. With this in mind and, as we strive to ensure that our services are responsive to people’s needs, we have been reviewing some of the feedback we have received which indicates that the carers supporting Woodlands patients would welcome a little more help and support.

That is why for 2016/17 we have made ‘Enhancing the support we offer to carers’ a priority in our Quality Account.  As part of that support we will be developing a support group especially for those carers supporting Woodlands patients where we will look at things like:

  • managing symptoms
  • coping with stress and anxiety
  • eating well
  • spirituality
  • taking care of yourself
  • practical support

Supported by our Patient, Family & Friends Forum we have undertaken a survey to clarify the needs of carers and are now in the process of using the results of that survey, together with the other feedback we have received, to put together the programme for our first Carers Support Group which is expected to start later in the year.

Feedback from the survey gave us more of an insight about what Carers want and reassuringly it mirrored some of our own thoughts. Here are some of the comments received from Carers

“To talk to people going through the same thing and maybe counselling when needed”

“To give people help and quality of living”

“To talk to other carers in the same situation”

“Meeting people and getting to know others who understand your situations they have a similar problem themselves, just a chat to see the same people each week who then become friends”
