Light up a Life

Here at Woodlands Hospice we appreciate that Christmas can be a very difficult time of year when you have lost a loved one, or if you cannot be with someone you love, so every year we help hundreds of people to celebrate the lives of their family and friends by dedicating a light on one of our Christmas trees.

By dedicating a light to your loved ones, you will not only be celebrating their life, you will be helping us to support our patients and their families at a time when they need it most. Families like Billy's, who have shared their experience below.

We have two lovely ways you can honour someone special to you and your family:

  • If you would like to dedicate a light/s on one of our trees (located at our Hospice, St Andrew's Church in Maghull and St Michael's Church in Blundellsands) you can dedicate one on online
  • or if you would like to dedicate a light on our Virtual tree, where you can also include a message and a photo of your loved one, please visit our Woodlands Hospice Virtual Tree.

As part of your Light up a Life donation, you will receive a card with the name of your loved one and their name will also feature in our Book of Life which can be viewed at one of our three services during December. To guarantee the name(s) appearing in our Book of Life in time to be viewed at the services, please ensure your dedication has been received by Monday 25th November.

Our services will be taking place in the following locations, and please do let us know should you wish to attend:

  • Sunday 1st December, 4pm: Woodlands Hospice, AUH Campus, Longmoor Lane, Liverpool, L9 7LA
  • Monday 2nd December, 7pm: St Andrew's Church, 22 Damfield Lane, Maghull, L31 6DD
  • Sunday 8th December, 4pm: St Michael's Church, 10 St Michael's Road, Crosby, L23 8SD

If attending St Andrew's or St Michael's please note places are limited for these events so we will be issuing FREE entrance tickets for health and safety and catering purposes.

Billy's story

Billy's wife Cath was cared for at Woodlands last year where staff supported the family during this difficult time. Cath spent her final days at the Hospice prior to her sadly passing away in July. Billy wanted to share his personal story to help the Hospice, so that others can benefit from the same level of care and support that Cath, he and his two daughters Molly and Lucy have received.

"From the moment we went to Woodlands me, Cathy and my two daughters, Molly and Lucy were put at ease by how understanding and caring all the staff were. From the nursing staff to the housekeepers and the volunteers, they all had time to listen, talk and care, not only for Cath but for all our family including my brothers and sister and Cath's brothers.

The Family Support Team have been amazing and me and my girl's still continue with their support. Molly and Lucy have attended art club for group sessions plus one to one's for us all. Without the support of Woodlands over this time we would be a lot worse off. As a family we cannot thank them enough."

Billy, Molly and Lucy will be switching on the Christmas tree lights at the Light up a Life service at the Hospice on Sunday 1st December.

Thank you for your support to our Light up a Life appeal 2019. Through this simple act of remembering a loved one, you'll be helping to support others when they are at a really difficult time in their life.

*Alternatively, you can download a paper version of the form to print out and post to us, or call Carole Riley on 0151 529 4143 to dedicate a light over the phone and pay by card.
